Social Franchise Model for Women

HANDS has initiated a unique concept of Business in Box…. This is a step to strengthen the livelihood source and to extend the convenience for the community. This is an idea to provide business to our community based women workers to ensure the availability of daily health and hygiene related, in addition to grocery items. This has directly created a positive impact on women empowerment and convenience of the community on easy accessibility of daily use products.

In this social Franchise model HANDS provide initial one time grant to the woman for the bulk purchases for the shop. Women sell the commodities and earn profit and repurchase the required products from the identified local supplier.

The average cost of expenditure to establish a BiB center is approximately PKR. 16800 per BiB shop. The reports depict that on an average each worker earns or save about PKR 3000 to 3500/month

Micro-entrepreneurship, as an empowering approach can help rural women leave the poverty trap while providing reproductive health access to households in remote areas. As a model of socially responsible micro-franchising, BiB allows communities to co-produce pathways to satisfy their immediate social, economic and health-related needs. The flexible and adaptive mechanism offers rural women the opportunity to tap into their entrepreneurial potential by engaging with those community members who do not have sufficient means, knowledge or resources, as in the case of maternal health.

BiB has leveraged a fusion of micro-franchising and community-based co-ownership and support. Its design is scalable, adaptable, and can provide high social impact, including women’s economic participation and opportunity for development interventions to improve the livelihoods of the poor in deprived rural and remote locations, the above stated case is clearly elaborating the success rate of the initiative. The Success Formula

Hailing from an impoverished town Chitral of the country comes with numerous challenges especially acquiring quality education and getting a desired job. But determination and self-belief is what it takes to surmount these obstacles and this recipe helped me creating my own success story.

I was born on January 12, 1973 in a small village of District Chitral, namely Seen Lasht. The small village houses mere 180 people. We are six brothers including me and a sister. My father was grade-IV government servant in Chitral. He was not educated, but he never fell short in ensuring quality education to his children.

I received my primary education from government middle school of my native village. Later I got admission in high school Chitral which was 10 kilometres away from my village, therefore I had to go to school by foot daily and it continued for four years. I did I.Com (Intermediate in Commerce) from government commerce college, Chitral.

Later I started teaching at a private school of the area and I served my responsibilities as a teacher for five years. Then I decided to resume my education. I came from Chitral to Karachi in October 1998 and got admission in B. Com in Government Islamia College Karachi. Besides studies, I continued working for different private companies for livelihood.

After completing B.Com I started my career from a chartered accountant company. It was May 6, 2005 when I joined HANDS as an accountant at their head office. After two years on May 31, 2007 I was promoted to Manager Finance. During this tenure I managed several projects related to national and international donors. I have been awarded three ‘best performance awards’ in recognition of my services at the organisation.

On January 2010, I was promoted from Manager Finance to Senior Manager Finance to lead the reporting unit of the department. It was tenure of my new post during which I was honoured with best performance awards twice. On August 20, 2015 I was again promoted as Acting GM Finance, and I am continuing at the same slot from July, 2016 till date.

I am thankful to the Almighty Allah that he provided me opportunity to work in an organization like HANDS to prove my abilities. I found HANDS as the organization that helped my build my career. At the start of my career there were only three to four projects with limited.

Success Story of Dr. Zaib Taj

Zaib Taj d/o Tufail Ahmed Jumani (Rtd. Secretary Gov. Sindh) started her journey as beneficiary (user) of HANDS-DWA Independent Living Center from 15-April-2019. She was depressed & isolated in her home for 7 years because of her disability and lost her self-confidence completely She became disabled by a gunshot from police mobile which damaged her spinal cord and left her paralyzed. A qualified doctor moving independently suddenly became a totally dependent person which was a big shock along with the shock of getting divorced just after her marriage.

After 7 years of isolation and despair one of the colleague of Mr. Tufail Jumani met Zaib and observed her condition and referred her to “HANDS-DWA ILC” where she was treated as guest of honor. Dr. Zaib Taj visited the ILC she was shocked to see that a large number activist were serving humanity on a wheelchairs and have learned to live with their disabilities and making themselves useful for humanity. She received “Peer Counseling” by a Spinal Cord Peer counselor with the same disability and within few days Dr. Zaib started coming back to life. She started to teach the children with disabilities of HANDS-DWA ILC which helped to get her back in her professional life. Team HANDS-DWA ILC nominated her for the skill training for which she went to Islamabad and exhibited self- confidence as she did air travel with the support of personal attendant. She is now part of HANDS- DWA – ILC team as full time doctor.

Dr. Zaib Taj is now a role model for other women with disabilities and running women wing of HANDS-DWA ILC and a symbol of empowerment

Open Defecation Free – A challenge to Health, Equity and Dignity

Open defecation is a serious threat on sanitation health and dignity.

In Pakistan, 25 million people still practice Open Defecation and women are the ones who are the worst affected. The death toll from diarrheal diseases shows that 53,000 Pakistani children under five die annually from diarrhea due to poor water and sanitation. The women are exposed to not only health hazards but sexual abuse and violence every single day and especially after nightfall.

Girls stop their education not for lack of desire, but for lack of sanitation. HANDS – WASH program is committed to the SDG target of providing clean water and sanitation to its target communities and to address the issue of sanitation Community Led Total Sanitation -CLTS approach has been adopted. CLTS is an innovative methodology for mobilizing communities to completely eliminate Open Defecation (OD).

Communities are facilitated to conduct their own appraisal and analysis of open defecation (OD) and take their own action to become ODF (open defecation free). Pakistan Approach to Total Sanitation- PATS emphasize towards behavior change and social mobilization endorsing the use of a number of branded total sanitation models, having a key role of communities, which include, Community Led Total Sanitation, School Led Total Sanitation, Component Sharing, Sanitation Marketing and Disaster Response HANDS has implemented Water and Sanitation activities with respect to ODF in 16 districts.

The target communities were sensitized with the help of Community Resource Persons – CRPs/Village Wash Committees- VWC regarding the hazards of open defecation/poor sanitary practices and its consequences. The receptive environment created through the collective efforts made it possible that all the target villages have been declared Open Defecation Free.

An ‘Open Defecation Free’ village is characterized by Excreta free open spaces, Excreta free open drains / discharges, Excreta free hands, and Sustaining of this status.

Overall 2822 villages have been declared Open Defecation Free

In the intervention districts the Open Defecation status has changed as compared to non- intervention districts and status of PDHS 2017-18 areas 55% of intervention areas have flush system to sewerage tank as compared to 40.3 in non intervention areas and 29.9% in PDHS 29% villages.

Education Of A Girl Is The Education Of Nation

My name is Iqra and I belong to a small remote village Ilyas Abrejo, in district Matiari, Sindh. The total population of our village is about 2500 and most of the people in our village work either as laborer or agricultural labor to earn their living. There are 02 government primary boy’s and girl’s schools in our village but other basic facilities are not available in the village. In 2003, HANDS with the financial support of Aga Khan Foundation, started an Early Childhood Education (ECE) program for children 3 to 5 years of age as part of Early Childhood Development (ECD).

The project was named RCC – Releasing Confidence and Creativity and it was initiated in Government Primary schools in the village. A separate well equipped ECE classroom was established in each of the target school and Early Childhood Education program was started along with appointment of a trained certified teacher for ECE class. Prior to this program there was no concept of education of children of 3 – 5 years’ age group.

At the beginning of the program, about 30 children got registered in the ECE class and I was also among one of them. Due to efforts and hard work of the teacher and a good learning environment of the school, I was motivated to further continue my education. After passing the primary classes I got admission in high school in the nearby village. Keeping in view, my hard work and interest in studies, my parents encouraged me for higher education and I continued.

Now I am student of LLB part 11 and intend to continue InshAllah with same zest and fervor. Looking at my progress in education, other girls in the village were also motivated and now there are several girls who are getting higher education from different institutes. We hope that this trend will continue in future as well and the girls will keep on getting higher education in our remote villages.

I owe my success in the field of education to my parents’ prayers and HANDS. I pray that in future HANDS and other such organizations will continue to provide such services in the remote areas of not just Sindh but all over Pakistan. This will enable girls like me to work and play our role in the development of our country along with our fellow brothers.

Total 123,738 students, 3796 teachers and 5754 School Management Committee members have been benefitted through 959 schools under the best practice service models of HANDS Education & Literacy Program.

HANDS ECD Achievements

The following are major achievements of HANDS Early Childhood Education & Development Program.

  • Established 504 ECED classes in 168 Government & Community schools of Sindh
  • Trained 654 Government & Community teachers on ECED
  • Trained 168 SMCs on school management and prepared school development and improvement plans with focus on ECED implementation in the schools.
  • Established 168 play areas for students in primary schools.
  • Impact Assessment of learners/Students of Education Program.
  • During the academic session of 2018-19, the average reported attendance of students was 80%. The success rate of student’s in public schools for girls was 89.6% while for the girls and boys 72%, while in private schools, the success rate of girls was 83.5% and boys was 81.3% which was marked good progress as per compare with previous years.
